We’re not a bank – and that’s by design. As a member-owned credit union, we’re here to help you thrive, not just transact. At Hughes Federal Credit Union, we build relationships, strengthen communities, and help our members achieve financial wellness. Our difference isn’t just in what we offer, but why we offer it. Our mission is simple: to make a positive difference in each member’s financial life.
Not-for-profit
Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives. We exist to serve our members, not to make a profit. Unlike most financial institutions, credit unions do not issue stock or pay dividends to outside stockholders. Instead, earnings are returned to our members through lower loan rates, higher dividends on deposits, and lower fees.
Taxation
Credit unions do pay taxes, including payroll, sales, and property taxes. However, Congress has exempted credit unions from federal income taxes because of their unique structure and purpose. As not-for-profit, member-owned financial cooperatives, credit unions are governed by volunteer boards and exist to serve the financial needs of their members, particularly in historically underserved communities. This tax status allows credit unions to reinvest earnings into better rates, lower fees, and programs that strengthen financial well-being for their members and the communities they serve.
Ownership
Credit unions are built on the principle of member ownership. Every member is an equal owner with an equal vote, regardless of how much they have on deposit. Unlike banks, which are owned by shareholders, credit unions are owned by the people they serve. One member, one vote.
Membership Eligibility
Anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in Tucson, or through other affiliations you may have, may become a member. Other affiliations include employment at one of our select employer groups or having a family member who is a member of Hughes. You may also make a small donation to one of our community service groups.
Social Purpose
People Helping People. Credit unions exist to help people, not make a profit. Our goal is to serve all our members – every member counts! Our members are loyal, knowing Hughes will be there for them in both good and bad times. The people-first philosophy encourages credit unions and their employees to engage in community charitable activities and worthwhile causes.
Membership at Hughes Federal Credit Union is open to anyone that lives, works, worships or attends school in Tucson, or through other affiliations you may have. Open an account online or visit one of our convenient branches.
Hughes is committed to making a positive difference in each member's financial life. We take our members further by offering an exceptional service experience, which includes low-cost products and services, such as one low rate on loans, higher dividends on savings, convenient online and mobile services, and more.
Board members volunteer to serve a three-year term and play an active role in governing the credit union at a higher level. The Supervisory Committee plays a pivotal role in ensuring operational transparency, rigorous compliance with regulations, and a focus on member feedback.
Hughes Federal Credit Union believes in giving back to the community we serve through sponsorships and donations. Every year, Hughes looks to help numerous local organizations that are just as dedicated to improving the overall well-being of our community as we are with financial support, giveaway items, adult and youth financial education, and much more.
